Transporte Aéreo Guatemalteco (TAG) Airlines inaugurated three destinations to Mexico: Mérida (MID), Oaxaca (OAX) and Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ), which join the current operations to Cancun (CUN) and Tapachula (TAP), being the company with the largest offer of destinations between the Aztec country and Guatemala.
The Guatemalan airline began the largest international expansion of its more than 60-year legacy, inaugurating 6 routes between Mexico and Guatemala in less than a year, maximizing the flow of tourism.
TAG’s CEO, Julio Gamero, pointed out that it will strengthen the air connectivity of the Maya World, boosting the aviation industry and tourism for economic growth.
In addition to the five destinations mentioned above, the company is considering expanding its offer of cities in the southwest of Mexico by adding Huatulco to its network of destinations. According to the airline, its current routes to Cancun-Guatemala, Cancun-Flores and Guatemala-Tapachula report an occupancy rate of over 90 percent.

Operations will be carried out in Saab 340 aircraft with capacity for 34 passengers, providing 748 seats per week on the three connections. The company plans to replace the SAAB 340s by the end of the year with Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft for 50 passengers.

The company also flies to Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, Flores and Puerto Barrio in Guatemala, with Embraer ERJ 145, Saab 340 and Embraer 110 aircraft.
The market between Guatemala and Mexico
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, by May 2022, the supply of flights between both countries is 18.9% higher compared to the same period in 2019. However, supply in ASK and seats is 12.9% and 3.5% lower respectively.
While TAG Airlines is the leading carrier in terms of the number of monthly flights with 200 operations, Aeromexico continues to lead in monthly seat supply with 25,000 seats. Volaris and Volaris El Salvador follow with a combined 23,000 seats per month, followed by TAG (7,000) and Aeromar with 2,000.
During the first quarter of 2022, 77,019 passengers were mobilized with an average occupancy of 70%, Mexico’s third most important Central American market. The most important links are:
